Katla. is an Icelandic band featuring ex-Sólstafir drummer and visual artist Guðmundur Óli Pálmason and singer/multi-instrumentalist Einar Thorberg Guðmundsson (Fortíð, Potentiam). Named after one of Iceland's greatest active volcanos, Katla. creates ultra wide-angle, panoramic music that showcases shimmering guitars, hook-laden melodies, soaring synths and a dark, entrancing power.
While the duo's horizon-stretching sound gets its hooks in fast, and doesn't let go; the lyrics, delivered with distinctive voice and darkwave-like melancholic undercurrent, take their time seeping in, centering on the both the joys and trials of living in Iceland, a country of sharp contrasts. A place where fire and ice co-exist and dark winters are offset by the summer's midnight sun. A country where insular existence has spurred a rich and vibrant culture.
"Every band that has ever signed to any label, anywhere, in the history of time itself has said how super excited they are to work with said label and how they are a perfect match," say Katla.. "Katla. is not about to break that rule. It might sound like a cliché but we really feel that there are very few labels that value artistic vision as much as Prophecy Productions does, and to us that is an important factor. We see Katla. as something more than mere entertainment. To us, Katla. is an art project combining music, lyrics and visual art to create haunting atmospheres that we hope portrays, at least to a certain extent, the cold, desolate landscape of Iceland, and man's millennia long battle with the unforgiving nature up here in the far north."
"We hope you will enjoy the journey through the battered terrain and desolate landscapes," Katla. continue. "If only in your mind."
Katla. is currently putting the finishing touches on its debut album and follow-up to 2016's two song EP, Ferðalok, hailed as "dynamic post-rock" that forges "an atmosphere of profound and infinite thirst to fly higher above the snowy mountains".
Einar and Guðmundur have each been active in the international metal scene for over two decades, but Katla. is a new project with new goals and a new focus. It is time for Katla to erupt again!
