<img src='https://us.prophecy.de//out/pictures/generated/product/thumb/250_250_100/1476-in.exile-pro.272-main.jpg' border=0 align='left' hspace=5>There seems to be something sinister lurking beneath the beautiful landscapes of New England. Edgar Allan Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, and Stephen King, those American masters of the horror genre have been born and raised there, where they have also created their dark writings. It is hardly surprising that a band hailing from the infamous town of Salem, Massachusetts such as 1476 have created an album, which is heading down a dark road. Yet "In Exile" is not telling stories about witches, ghouls, or tentacled beings emerging from the depths. It is we, the people, who are on this path. On "In Exile", each song represents a world of its own. It all started, when singer and multi-instrumentalist Robb Kavjian pondered upon that ancient question of where do people go when they die. In his mind, he started to imagine real persons and imaginary characters as mystical beings or deities. These avatars served as spiritual guides to their personal worlds during meditations that used visualisation techniques. This concept of individual worlds in the afterlife led to a stylistically quite diverse album, which does not make it easier to describe the band's sound. "In Exile" contains elements of folk, rock, metal, punk, and also a healthy pinch of post-punk, which can be summed up loosely as 'wayward occult rock'. 1476 were founded by Robb Kavjian and percussionist and drummer Neil DeRosa in Salem, Massachusetts. The 'first’ album, which is still found being mentioned about everywhere, is officially no longer a part of the discography as the core duo discontinued "A Wolf's Age" (2009). This attributes the role of the official debut to "Wildwood" (2012). The album was widely circulated in the underground of several scenes. The sophomore full-length was designed as a soundtrack for an exhibition in Salem, MA tellingly entitled "Edgar Allan Poe: A Life of Hope & Despair" (2014). With "Our Season Draws Near", 1476 returned to a more 'conventional' approach, at least in their terms in 2017. Whatever it is that leads artists to the dark side in New England has also touched 1476. For all those, who like their music outside of genre confines and who always wanted Dante as their personal guide to the infernal depths: "In Exile" offers radiant paths to take into exciting worlds beyond our reality.<br />

<img src='https://us.prophecy.de//out/pictures/generated/product/thumb/250_250_100/1476-our.season.draws.near-pro.200-main.jpg' border=0 align='left' hspace=5>New England's 1476 creates isolationist sound stories: musically and attitudinally coming from a punk/DIY background, they arguably absorbed all genres of guitar-heavy and atmospheric music there ever was since--including sub-genres of metal, neofolk, and ambient. Their DIY development has freed it from any and all genre restrictions, allowing the duo to boundlessly delve into conceptual worlds. From their viewpoint, they did not stick to an anarchic attitude, but delved into esotericism, occultism, Nordic mythology, and runology. What does this lead to? Some unparalleled boundless music--energetic, emotional, and always atmospheric with strong conceptual themes outside of the ordinary, often capturing the energy and mood of the old, haunting landscapes of New England's coastal regions.<br />
<br />
On their third album, the winter-themed "Our Season Draws Near", 1476 strips away the dense layers and production from past albums and delivers its most raw, intimate and urgent record to date. Far more guitar and drum-driven than anything the band has created before, "Our Season Draws Near" showcases 1476 at both maximum aggressiveness and its most delicate, using minimalism, space and the power of dynamics to create massive, heavy sound.<br />
<br />
Described as 'a small candle flame of life lost in the middle of a winter void,' the album delves into experiences with isolation and alienation and the idea that beneath the frozen surface is an internal fire and desire to defeat these obstacles. Produced by the band and mixed by Markus Siegenhort of post-black metal spearheads Lantlôs, "Our Season Draws Near" captures 1476 at its heaviest and most personal apex.

<br />
"Wildwood" is a work of dark, atmospheric Art Rock that includes undertones of Metal, Neofolk and Experimental music. The record is a thematic experience about exploring and embracing contradiction. The music is dense, atmospheric and aggressive, yet incorporates acoustic and ambient moments to create surreal sonic landscapes. The lyrics comment on human nature throughout, interspersing hermetic, angelic, and animalistic imagery which ties the more introspective aspects of the album together. "Wildwood" is enhanced by the inclusion of 1476's 2012 EP "The Nightside", which contains four additional songs from the "Wildwood" recording sessions. These songs provide a somber counterpoint to the dense, driving, and at times abrasive sound of "Wildwood".

<br />
Originally released in 2010, 1476's "Smoke In The Sky" places a strong lyrical focus on self-realization and destroying/overcoming obstacles to be reborn as a stronger, healthier self. Inspired by the Hermetic idea of "inner alchemy" or the "turning of lead into gold" and the old self into new, the recording is of a Tribal/Folk nature and instrumented with acoustic guitars, bowed and finger picked stand-up bass, piano, drums, and an analogue synthesizer to create drones for backdrops/ambience. <br />
On this reissue, "Smoke..." is enhanced by the recording of a live concert, originally released under the title "Live. July 17th 2010. Unity, ME.". Inspired by Death In June's later-era stripped-down live performances, all songs were partially rearranged for one acoustic guitar, drums/percussion, and vocals.

<br />
"Edgar Allan Poe: A Life Of Hope & Despair" was conceived in October 2014 as the soundtrack to a Poe-inspired art show and is 1476's first foray into the realm of soundtrack creation. In contrast to the pulse-raising feel of Poe's literary works, the sound of "A Life Of Hope & Despair" aims to explore the melancholic and quaint life, love, and death of the author. The mood and ambience that lives on the periphery of 1476's music takes center stage on this release. Each song draws upon both Neoclassical and experimental influences, weaving piano and string sections together with analogue synthesizers, samples, glitch, and drone to create an atmospheric, engaging experience akin to Chopin making music with Ulver and Current 93. All hail the "Tomahawk Man"!
