Self-titled albums usually suggest either a questionable "return to the roots" or a band reinvention of sorts. For brooding black metal beasts, Bethlehem, however, the release of the eponymously titled ‘Bethlehem’ marks the 25th anniversary of the group, which the German group celebrates in their own wayward style.

‘Bethlehem’ is a welcome rejuvenation in every respect. When the line-up that recorded their 2014 release, Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia, fell apart, founding member/mastermind Jürgen Bartsch took the bull by its proverbial horns and matters into his own deviceful hands.

After long-standing drummer Wolz returned to the fold, Bartsch recruited Russian guitarist Karzov (who took on a major role in Bethlehem's songwriting) and a new singer: none other than Onielar from German black metal stalwarts Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult! Onielar’s deranged vocals add to the psychotic morbidity of ‘Bethlehem’, an album that conjures a fresh take on Bethlehem's mid-to-late-90s sound that, says Bartsch, is "anarchic as always”.

Ultimately, ‘Bethlehem’ encompasses everything the progenitors of Dark Metal are about, combining the group’s early harshness with an outrageous catchiness and the experimentalism Bethlehem has always boasted, all crowned with a production that perfectly balances both rawness and power.

Hau ab!

"Hau ab" (engl.: "Fuck off!") is the title of a lush Bethlehem vinyl box set featuring 10 LPs (180g vinyl with special vinyl mastering) with all studio albums (incl. the brand new work "Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia") as well as the EPs and singles Thy Pale Dominion", "Reflektionen auf's Sterben", "Profane Fetmilch lenzt elf krank" and "Stönkfitzchen". Box and LP covers are finished with spot varnish and the extra thick paperboard box additionally sports a scratch-resistant lamination. On top the box contains a 60-pages book (large-size hardcover, 28x28 cm) containing all song lyrics, countless artworks and band photographies from the entire history of Bethlehem plus five posters.
"Hau ab" will have a print run of 500 copies - 250 copies as picture discs, 250 copies on classic black vinyl.

Re-issue of the groundbreaking debut album

With their groundbreaking debut album, Bethlehem gave name to an entire genre: "Dark Metal". To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this classic, a reissue in Digipak format with bonus DVD will be released. The DVD contains a video recording of a complete Bethlehem concert in Poland from 1994 and is thus a highly interesting document of the early stages of one of the most influential metal bands from Germany.

Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia: fear of the number 666

Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia - a title that symptomizes what Bethlehem is: nonconformist, recalcitrant, aloof and obscure.
Fans had to wait a long time for a new album from the group that coined the term "Dark Metal" with the same-titled album and whose "Dictius Te Necare" and "S.U.i.Z.i.D." defined the Suicidal/Depressive Black Metal genre. Four years have passed since "Stönkfitzchen", and their last album "Mein Weg" dates back even a full decade. Finally though, Bethlehem return with their sixth studio record and are once again nothing but themselves, shrewdly eccentric both musically and lyrically. Following the direction of their recent releases, they also hark back to their very beginnings with songs like "Spontaner Freitod", but do not shy away from balladic moments and boldly incorporate Industrial-elements. Their typical lyrics, written in Jürgen Bartsch's cryptic style, are still one of the band's trademarks and again intoned by Guido Meyer de Voltaire, the singer on both "Schatten aus der Alexander Welt" and "Mein Weg". Thus, we can attest to Bethlehem with some satisfaction: Things will stay the same but different again!

Germany’s Bethlehem have shaped extreme music for the last 28 years as one of the forerunners of so-called depressive or suicidal black metal. With their first three albums "Dark Metal" (1994), "Dictius Te Necare" (1996) and "S.U.i.Z.i.D." (1998), they spearheaded a movement with lasting impact on several genres. At each turn, Bethlehem has released albums which perplex and enthrall their ever-growing audience.

After an experimental phase, the group continued on its abrasive path with "Bethlehem" (2016), introducing a new line-up with front woman Onielar (Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult), whose punishing performance have, by now, become another trademark next to founding member Jürgen Bartsch's unfailing inventiveness. "Lebe dich leer" ("empty yourself by living") bears witness to that: Each song differs from the next, telling its own story while weaving together a sonic cloth of sheer terror. Haunting banshee vocals mix with melody and heavy riffs; delving from low, soggy grooves to soaring and windswept plains of sound.

The album blends Bethlehem's classic type of black and death metal with influences from early wave and industrial, not once sacrificing their well-loved aesthetic and sound. A work as unique as traditional, "Lebe dich leer" will shock and awe listeners of all kinds of daring music and still ring true to the band's devoted fans of nearly three decades. Chaos is coming…
