The ideal synthesis of melancholy and progressive energy

When Dark Suns approach an album, they never do things by halves, but to realise their fifth full-length, the band rose above themselves: The fact that they spent their entire label advance to record in renowned Funkhaus Studio in Berlin, Germany, with producer Yensin Jahn (Alice Cooper, Mando Diao) testifies the musicians' conviction of and belief in the quality of their work. Eventually, the prog/art rock institution financed a top-class mix with producer Peter Junge in London via crowdfunding in order to give their new material the final touch.

After embracing the world with arms wide open on their "everything goes"-record "Orange", the Leipzig-based group delves into the realm of sleep with "Everchild", searching for eternal childhood - escapism allegorised, one could say, a longing for the past as the allegedly best place to be … yet not merely in a nostalgic way: During their slightly wistful retrospective, which sees the group revisiting thoughts and stylistic elements from "Existence" (2005), they are rather exploring possibilities to satisfy their lasting hunger for innovation and pursue their ideal by synthesising melancholy with progressive energy.

An intense fusion, to be sure, thanks to abundant musicality: Evgeny Ring (saxophone) and Govinda Abbott (trumpet) have become full members besides former live-only drummer Dominique "Gaga" Ehlert, whereas original skinsman Niko Knappe focuses solely on singing - a brave step just like Dark Suns' reinterpretation of Tori Amos' "Yes, Anastasia", its message at once summarising the core of what "Everchild" is about: "If you're really looking for a challenge, put up with yourself."

Dark Suns from Leipzig take the moniker of their fourth album serious indeed: the dark tone colours of their previous albums have given way to a more vivid orange hue. Instead of once more serving up complex and elaborate slabs of prog metal, Dark Suns' mode of operation is a lot more spontaneous and rocking on "Orange" – flagrantly flirting with classic (prog) rock of the Seventies and more easy-going than ever before. It fits this concept that "Orange" was recorded live in the studio, in order to capture that special something of progressive rock music in the most authentic way possible and to allow creative space for the illustrious instrumentation (e.g., Hammond organ and diverse brass players).

The result is a mature and captivating album that bristles with a youthful élan and, for all its reverence for the classical roots, does not forget the meaning of the word 'progressive'.

A prog mosaic of enormous expressiveness

following two highly successful tours with established progressive metalists Pain Of Salvation and two years of exacting work, Dark Suns have finished their third album, "Grave Human Genuine". The band doesn't merely pick up where the successful predecessor "Existence" (2005) left off, they present themselves as many-facetted as never before. A clear nod to doom, complex polyrhythms, unusual and diverse instruments and, last but not least, drummer Niko Knappe's characteristic yearning vocals comprise the album's cornerstones. The variety of sounds stretches from angular metal riff attacks via atmospheric ambient soundscapes and techno reminiscences to avant-garde influences - despite this complexity, an accomplished musical mosaic of enormous expressiveness.
