Eye of Nix was formed in 2012 with the intent of conjuring music that is threatening, beautiful, and harsh. Founding vocalist & guitarist Joy Von Spain, guitarist Nicholas Martinez, and noise/sound collage artist Masaaki Masao were joined in 2017 by bassist Zach Wise and drummer Luke LaPlante.

Recorded by renowned producer Billy Anderson (Bell Witch, Pallbearer) at The Hallowed Halls in Portland, Oregon and mastered by Brad Boatright (Gatecreeper, Necrot), their new LP Black Somnia centers on themes of fear, control, and anxiety while shape-shifting through a lens of blackened psychedelia and doom. Commented vocalist Joy Von Spain: “The album is an exploration of the forces of fear and control, responses to these insidious, unseen powers, the specter that remains when we awaken from mysterious and frightening dreams. Billy Anderson worked with us on ideas to preserve the noisier elements of our sound and the layers of atmosphere.”

The visual elements for Black Somnia were created in collaboration with occult photographer and artist Carlos Melgoza (Anima Nocturna) and an international group of Butoh performers (Alan Sutherland, Vanessa Skantze, Marina Sossi) with Susan DuMett (Vox Vespertinus).

Black Somnia's first print run was issued in the US as a vinyl-only edition pressing limited to 250. Through the prominence of Black Somnia's original pressing, the result is an official worldwide release through Prophecy (first time on CD & a new version of the LP). The majestic elements of the album seamlessly accent each other, creating a memorable mesmerizing audio experience that will hypnotize the listeners senses. Admirers of Pharmakon, Satyricon and early Soundgarden will find Black Somnia to be a uniquely intriguing musical masterpiece. The band has accomplished to create an album that defies all genre standards within modern day dark music.

Since their formation in 2012, Seattle’s Eye of Nix have established themselves as masters of juxtaposition. Across an EP and two full-lengths, flanked by steady touring, they have coalesced beauty and harshness by creating a signature sound that melds fervent doom, eruptive black metal and psychedelic rock.

Throughout the sonic journey of "Ligeia," Eye of Nix ups the ante in all respects. The quintet's third album is a dark and seductive vortex swirling around an inextinguishable light, dragging listeners up and down through peaks and valleys of cacophonous noise and euphoric melody.

With its title invoking one of the sirens from Greek mythology who enticed humans to their demise, this harrowing yet thought-provoking record lures the listener through storms and calm waters to the farthest frontiers of existence. Lyrically delving into obsession, trepidation, addiction, and illusion, “Ligeia” provokes a range of emotions that are both comforting and unsettling simultaneously. For singer and guitarist Joy Von Spain, the idea that “any moment could be the last we experience as ourselves is an endless sea of inspiration.”

Accompanied by Michael Zech (Secrets Of The Moon, The Ruins of Beverast, Triptykon, Bölzer etc.), who engineered and produced the tracks at Sound House in Seattle with the group, “the songs became colossal yet contemplative, a complete vision.” Mastered by James Plotkin (Isis, Aluk Todolo, Nadja), this contrastive piece of work is sure to stretch perceptions of time and space.

"Ligeia" is available as Digipak CD, LP (black, limited purple) and hardcover artbook featuring golden hotfoil embossment cover and significantly enhanced artwork alongside a 6-track bonus CD of covers, alternate versions and remixes.
