The musical and conceptional cornerstone of Helrunar's discography

"Grátr". Helrunar's debut album. was released in a limited edition of 500 CDs back in 2003. By no means was this first sign of life the tentative steps of newbies in the world of pagan and black metal. nor were Helrunar searching for their own identity or the style that fits them best. No. the vision of the three musicians from Muenster/Germany was fully realized right from the start. and "Grátr" already contained all characteristics that would establish Helrunar as one of the genre's leading lights in the years to come: furious pagan/black metal hymns that are as catchy as they are aggressive. complete with an individual. philosophical and spiritual bend to their lyrics. Apart from that. Helrunar's debut set the standards the band easily met on their later releases: distinctive songwriting. expressive vocals. and powerful production values on top of it.

Hence. it is hardly surprising that songs from "Grátr" such as 'Seelenwinter'. 'Ich bin die Leere'. or 'Raune mit der Tiefe' are still ranking among Helrunar's absolute live favourites. No surprise. too. that many of Helrunar's die-hard fans consider "Grátr" as the band's best album. making the CD one of the most sought-after records of the whole scene.
To cater to these demands. "Grátr" will finally be re-released for the band's followers. The first 3.000 copies of this reissue will be presented in a graceful Digipak containing a bonus CD with another one of Helrunar's rare tracks. 'Hauch wird Sturm'!

Joint conceptual release by the two Mythological Metal bands

Apart from being a collaborative effort by Helrunar und Árstí∂ir Lífsins, who each recorded one song of epic length, "Fragments - A Mythological Excavation" also testifies to the friendship between the labels of both bands, Prophecy Productions and Ván Records. As the title of this release (overall duration: 35 minutes) already suggests, both groups delve into mythological topics: Helrunar's "Wein für Polyphem“ draws from Homer's "Odyssey" while Árstí∂ir lífsins‘ "Vindsvalarmál“ taps into the sources of Old Norse mythology. What in the end unifies both songs musically as well as lyrically are their monumental character and apocalyptic undertone which is manifest to the elemental force of those mythological ideas - a power reanimated by "Fragments".

Never before have Helrunar sounded so nihilistic

With their so far five studio albums, Helrunar have established themselves as figureheads of serious Black Metal from Germany inspired by Northern mythology. "Niederkunfft" now marks the beginning of a new era for them - both musically and conceptually.

On "Niederkunfft", Skald Draugir attends to a historical topic for the first time, namely European people on the threshold between the Middle Ages and modern times - surrounded by superstition and fear, torn between religion and the Enlightenment. The music follows this conceptual realignment: it is less furious than on the band's early works, yet more oppressive and bleak than ever. "Niederkunfft" is still based on elements from Black Metal inspired by Nordic themes and essentially shaped by Skald Draugir's darkly ominous, unique voice, but by integrating the destructive force of primal Swedish Death Metal and the heaviness of Doom, Helrunar gain a surprising expressiveness that once more amounts to a perfect symbiosis of music and language. Never before have Helrunar sounded so nihilistic, and never has the band conveyed the intensive feel of threat, fear and looming doomsday in such a convincing manner.

Those who have considered Helrunar a pure Pagan Black Metal band until now have underestimated the duo. With "Niederkunfft", Skald Draugir and Alsvartr impressively prove that they are not defined by tight conceptual corsets, but stand for atmospherically grasping extreme Metal with contentual depth.

Founded in 2001, German black metal instigators Helrunar have gone from strength to strength, establishing themselves as a band approaching Nordic themes with brains. Records such as "Frostnacht" and "Baldr Ok Íss" are regarded as seminal works for the country's scene before the group shook off genre conventions altogether in favour of a holistic approach to extreme music and its topics. This is manifest in 2011's double album "Sól".

While their sixth full-length "Niederkunfft" (2015) marked the beginning of a new era with recourse to archaic death and doom metal pondering late medieval superstition in the face of the Enlightenment, successor "Vanitas Vanitatvm" shows yet another tack, albeit within a similar stylistic framework. Musically, front man M.D., who forms one half of the group besides drummer S.K., places "Vanitas Vanitatvm" between its predecessor and the "Sól" era. "The songs are more compact and mature, also mostly faster, and again, more black metal. Apart from that, there have been influences you might call nostalgic."

With its title referring to a famous ode by 17th century poet Andreas Gryphius, Helrunar's seventh puts the well-known saying (meaning "vanity of vanities" or "all is vain") into a contemporary context, resulting in "our most cynical and misanthropic work to date in a consciously exaggerated way," says M.D. "We address different forms of vanity and narcissism, which are rampant in our age, to reveal their psychological and societal origins and consequences. Both traits are contrasted by death and corruption to show their inanity."

The lyrics, once again mainly sung in German and harking back to the Baroque period, draw inspiration from 4.000 years of human culture. This encompasses sagas like Homer's "Odyssey, the Bible amongst different forms of literature, cinema or actual historical events such as the Plague. By exploring the lore of regions like the Mediterranean, quoting from the picaresque novel "Simplicius Simplicissimus" or depicting the mythical "nachzehrer" as a modern stalker, the duo reveal vanity for what it really is – vain.
