NEGURĂ BUNGET present their breath-taking swansong "Zău" to the world. This captivating, deep, and multi-layered final part of the Romanian's "Transylvanian trilogy" was hanging by a thread. When the creative mastermind and driving force behind NEGURĂ BUNGET, drummer Gabriel "Negru" Mafa suffered a terminal heart-attack on March 21, 2017 his tragic passing seemed to dictate that his grand vision of a metal-anchored musical interpretation of Romania's beautiful landscapes, traditions, and myths as well as his homeland's spiritually was doomed to remain as unfinished as Beethoven's 10th symphony. Yet the veteran musicians that had been with Negru in the final incarnation of NEGURĂ BUNGET's ever-changing line-up were not prepared to give up let his vision slip into unheard obscurity. By sheer luck, Negru's drum tracks for "Zău" had already been laid down and recorded before the band's final tour. All the sketches, demos, and rehearsal room recordings that they had been working on were painstakingly gathered, and each band member respectfully filled in the gaps in the same way as they would have done with the remaining co-founder of NEGURĂ BUNGET still alive; in utter dedication to the original idea. The result of this labour of love is "Zău", the stunning culmination and climax of NEGURĂ BUNGET's musical evolution and the "Transylvanian trilogy". On this album, the traditions of black and dark pagan metal have been completely fused with elements from Romania's rich musical heritage. Rich textures and epic cinematic passages make way for fragile and tranquil moments to be superseded by furious outbreaks. Just like the ever changing nature of Romania's Banat and Transylvania, "Zău" captures the colours and moods of the turn of the seasons in these lands and brings ancient legends to live. Formed in the city of Timișoara in the Banat region of Western Romania in in 1995 by Negru and guitarist, vocalist and keyboard player Edmond‘ Hupagrammos’ Karban. NEGURĂ BUNGET's band name is derived from ancient Romanian meaning a "dark, misty forest”, and it proved to be the defining legacy for 2002’s "'n crugu bradului" – an album that became the bridge between the band’s orthodoxy - shedding past and unchartered territory into which they would head next. The following album "OM" (2006) brought NEGURĂ BUNGET into the international spotlight and put Romania onto the global map of metal. After the recording of "Maestrit" – a re-imagining of "Măiastru sfetnic" that was finished in 2009, an irrevocable, acrimonious split ended the collaboration of Negru and Hupogrammos, who went on to form DORDEDUH with Sol Faur and then bassist Arioch. Negru continued with a much changed line-up, when NEGURĂ BUNGET re-emerged in 2010 with the full-length, "Vîrstele Pămîntului". Again, there was a striking level of continuity despite the many changes. Although NEGURĂ BUNGET released a follow-up EP, "Poartă de dincolo" in 2011, it would be a further four years before the band re-invented itself for the final time – still with Negru at the helm but again with a completely new line-up. NEGURĂ BUNGET drummer, remaining co-founder, and creative force, Gabriel "Negru" Mafa embarked on a trilogy of albums, starting with "Tau" (2015), that would form, as he put it at the time: "… a personal vision of what Transylvania means." While the eight tracks of "Tău" were each aligned to a specific landscape, the second part of the trilogy beckoned with lush, expansive dynamics. "Zi" (2016) ranged from lucid tranquil moments to harsh and gnarled parts. On this penultimate album, NEGURĂ BUNGET drew strongly from local musical traditions based on the theme of the spirituality of places. With the final chapter of the "Transylvanian trilogy", NEGURĂ BUNGET take several steps back into blacker and harsher dimensions. With all the strands finally coming together, the resulting music is so much more than just a summary of its parts. Zău" is NEGURĂ BUNGET's lasting testament and legacy and a fitting tribute to Gabriel "Negru" Mafa, R.I.P., who will live on forever in this music.

Negura Bunget's testimony as a live act

Not only are Negura Bunget considered as one of the most original and most creative groups of the current Black Metal scene, the Romanian collective also has garnered an excellent reputation as a live act, being amongst the most active exponents of their trade. In the last three years alone, the band has played some 180 concerts all over Europe. Hence, the time is more than ripe for an appropriate audio-visual testimony of Negura Bunget's extraordinary qualities as a live act.

"Focul Viu" (Romanian for "Living Fire") is the title of Negura Bunget's first live DVD and double CD featuring a professional recording of a complete 90-minute performance in Bucharest in January 2008. "Focul Viu" is especially valuable because of the fact that it presents Negura Bunget in its classic line-up of Hupogrammos, Sol Faur, and Negru. As the band is probably never going to perform in this line-up again, "Focul Viu" is a must-have for every fan of Negura Bunget who didn't have a chance to witness the band live before their split. Negura Bunget is an award-winning Transilvanian black metal band that twists the genre sideways, presenting an atmospheric sound that incorporates both progressive underground metal and traditional Romanian music.

Negura Bunget's new album, "ZI" (English for 'Day' or 'Say') is the second part of the group's ambitious "Transilvanian Trilogy", released on the heels of 2015's celebrated album, "TAU" (English for 'Your' or 'Thy'), a record accurately hailed as "earthshaking" as it focused on unique native, natural landscapes and the mystique, legends, lore and meanings behind them.

In creating its most luminescent recording to date, Negura Bunget has further immersed itself in the traditions and practices of local Transilvanian inhabitants, exploring their connection with nature, and the way this relationship has shaped spiritual horizons. The beginning of the ambitious "Transilvanian Trilogy"

With "Tau", Romanian Folk Black Metal pioneers Negura Bunget not only present the long-awaited successor to "Virstele Pamintului" (2010), but also their first album for Lupus Lounge / Prophecy Productions with genuinely new song material. "Tau" also marks the beginning of Negura Bunget's ambitious "Transilvanian Trilogy", a sonic and visual tribute to the band's home country. While this first part highlights Romanian nature, parts two and three will deal with man, his traditions and practices as well as spiritual elements.

On "Tau", each of the eight songs represents a specific natural landscape with its unique atmosphere and mystique, its legends and meanings. Musically, Negura Bunget stick to their familiar range of sounds with both primal, harsh Black Metal elements and their meditative, folkloristic counterparts. Adding to their ever since wide array of instruments, Negura Bunget add a trumpet and other brass for the first time ever, all of which enhance the group's aural scope in an original way. Highlighting its distinctive character, the album boasts guest appearances by illustrious musicians such as Rune Eriksen (ex-Mayhem; guitars on "Impodobeala Timpului") and Sakis Tolis (Rotting Christ; vocals on "Tarim Vilhovnicesc"). Overall, the music on "Tau" seems more earthbound than on any other album by Negura Bunget and depends on an expressiveness which the Romanians have not embraced since the classic "Om". Still, the music within the concept of "Tau" is only one piece of the jigsaw. The crucial point is Transilvania's breathtaking landscape, so in the end, only the imagery of the 72-page artbook edition (which also features explanatory text on the places covered and their history) and the three (!) accompanying music videos will close the conceptual circle.

Incidentally, the title "Tau" has two meanings: on the one hand, it addresses man ("your/thy"), and on the other, it stands for small mountain lakes which are often, contrary to the seeming inconspicuousness, exceptionally deep.

"Maiestrit" is a magical and passionate re-interpretation of Negura Bunget's classic album "Maiastru Sfetnic" from 2000, the band's most pure Black Metal release. This record contains the last studio recordings of the classic Negura Bunget line-up (Hupogrammos, Sol Faur, and Negru). Negru is aware of the importance of this album in his band's history: "'Maiestrit' is the final legacy of Negura Bunget's past, and although we completed it separately, all belong to the same spirit. It marks the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one. May it be a meaningful moment for everybody."

Both Hupogrammos and Negru comment on the background of "Maiestrit":

Hupogrammos:
"A chapter is closing in our lives. Our intention was to re-en-body the purest black metal album we ever made and to do that in an impeccable manner, as black metal requires impeccability. The result of our endeavour was materialized as 'Maiestrit'.
We started to work on this album in 2007, and until the moment the band split we had recorded most of the electric guitars and the drums. Everything else was performed and composed after July 2009 (when we split up) by Sol Faur and myself, including the two bonus tracks that were especially composed and re-shaped for this album."

Negru:
"I am happy to see that the last materials we worked on under the original formula of the band are now completed.
The first idea to re-record the 'Maiastru sfetnic' album in its entirety we had soon after the original release came out in 1999. It took some years, though, before we finally started doing it. Now 'Maiestrit' is the final legacy of the NEGURA BUNGET past.
This is the last studio material we started working on in the old NEGURA BUNGET line-up that featured Sol Faur and Hupogrammos, and although we completed with them apart from the band, all belong to the same spirit. It marks the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one. May it be a meaningful moment for everybody."
