THE VISION BLEAK return in grand style: The German duo's seventh full-length "Weird Tales" constitutes a monumental tribute to the eponymous American pulp magazine and other tales of mystery and dark imagination. The album consists of a single track that is divided into internal chapters, which are each inspired by weird tales, poems, and other literature of horror and the macabre. On "Weird Tales", THE VISION BLEAK are referring to eminent writers of the legendary magazine such as H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, but also allude to authors that were never featured in the magazine, for example Edgar Allen Poe and Lafcadio Hearn, whose "Fantastics and Other Fancies" was very influential for this album. THE VISION BLEAK are pulling every register of their enormous musical prowess. The chapters range stylistically from flamboyant gothic rock via dark doom to harsh black and death metal parts – and about everything in between. All the thrilling elements that the following of the duo has come to expect and love is present on this record: the dramatic and theatrical, the harsh and heavy, the melancholic and eerie, and also catchy and symphonic moments. All of this is woven into a dense sonic tapestry, which is held together by a recurring ebb and flow that is reminiscent of classical composition. THE VISION BLEAK were born out of the friendship between guitarist, bass-player and harsh vocalist Markus Stock aka Ulf Theodor Schwadorf and drummer and singer Tobias Schönemann alias Allen B. Konstanz. After first experimenting with a more gothic rock formula, THE VISION BLEAK shaped up when the duo began to involve their mutual love for the horror genre. Already their debut album, "The Deathship Has a New Captain" (2004) became an instant success in both gothic and metal circles and is by now regarded as a classic. As the debut album's theme was based on classical horror movies, the Germans aptly dubbed their style: horror metal. With the following albums, THE VISION BLEAK cemented their reputation as purveyors of classy and quality music. Each full-length revolves around themes from the horror genre that can easily be deduced from their respective titles. "Carpathia" (2005) was followed by "The Wolves Go Hunt Their Prey (2007) and "Set Sail to Mystery (2010), "Witching Hour" (2013), and "The Unknown" (2016). THE VISION BLEAK, the masters of horror metal, are finally ready to gift the world their most ambitious song so far: "Weird Tales" is a beautiful and heartfelt homage to a poetic golden age of horror and mystery literature. Listen with care, but always be wary of the eldritch and forbidding sounds that lurk within this song!

Three years after "Set Sail To Mystery", the masters of Horror Metal have undergone creative rejuvenation. With the spontaneity and playfulness of "Witching Hour", Schwadorf and Konstanz hark back to their debut „The Deathship Has A New Captain", and the slogan "creepy and haunting entertainment" has not been more topical and fitting ever since 2004. The comprehensive witchcraft concept of "Witching Hour" highlights the duo as morbid storytellers with a bizarrely brutal, yet also entertaining assortment of fairytales and myths up their sleeves. Familiar elements such as groovy, driving riffs, sublime, melodic lead guitars and Konstanz' unique voice are still the defining characteristics, yet new implementations like the haunting flute or the most versatile and sinister vocals so far are crucial to the fact that "Witching Hour" in its entirety sounds more dour and unfathomable than earlier recordings.

"Carpathia - A Dramatic Poem", the second album by The Vision Bleak, is a unique dark musical drama where Konstanz and Schwadorf have exceeded themselves. Even though the Shadow Philharmonics - who already provided the majestic textures on "The Deathship Has A New Captain" - have been increased in size, it is Death Metal that rises erratically above all: forceful, black riffs, heavyweight drums, full and many-facetted vocals ... All this makes for a more homogenous and at the same time more complex overall picture than you would have expected after their debut. Each track is vibrantly brimming with sheer intensity and energy. "Carpathia" is nothing less than a Horror-Metal concept album par excellence!

The quintessence of The Vision Bleak

On their fourth studio album, The Vision Bleak are coming full circle. "Set Sail To Mystery" unites the driving Goth-rock energy of "The Deathship Has A New Captain", the dramatic heaviness of their sophomore "Carpathia - A Dramatic Poem", and the Nordic aggression of "The Wolves Go Hunt Their Prey". Lyrically, it is a journey into the realms of the supernatural and the abysses of the human mind, once more inspired by masters of weird fiction such as H. P. Lovecraft and E. A. Poe.

This year will see The Vision Bleak return to the stage of Horror Metal – more ghoulish and more poetic than ever before. After they journeyed through the underworld on the rotten planks of a deathship in the year 2004 (on "The Deathship Has A New Captain"), befittingly travelled the calamitous Carpathians in a black carriage in 2005 (on "Carpathia – A Dramatic Poem"), and sorted with wolves in 2007 (on "The Wolves Go Hunt Their Prey"), our necromancers Schwadorf and Konstanz are coming full circle in 2010.
On "Set Sail To Mystery", they once again set the tattered, ashen sails of the deathship and head towards midnight, death, and doom. Of course, the last few years have left their mark on the ferrymen. As if The Vision Bleak were leafing through the pages of a leather-bound tome on their history thus far, "Set Sail To Mystery" is cruising through many of the lethal waters they have sailed through in previous lifes: the driving gothic-rock energy of their debut, the dramatic heaviness of their sophomore, and the Nordic aggression of the last album are resonating on this, their fourth opus, like the death-knell of a cemetery chapel.
Yet, "Set Sail To Mystery" is much more than just the sum of its predecessors. Proof for this is the foreboding introduction, "A Curse Of The Grandest Kind", where a magical invocation written by the notorious poet Lord Byron is set to a haunting, atmospheric melody:

"And a magic voice and verse
Hath baptiz'd thee with a curse"

And The Vision Bleak aren't making any idle threats here: this intro already makes listeners succumb to the album's spell, forcing them to immerse themselves in the dark, gothic world this duo creates with masterly dramatics. Edgar Allan Poe needs to be present, of course, as does H.P. Lovecraft, who has been a member of the crew ever since the maiden voyage of the deathship.
These dark fairytales are performed as a very varied hell-ride featuring dramatic pomp, oppressive metal, and forceful energy as well as mean screeches, Thomas Helm's operatic vocals, and female furies – complemented by contemporary black-metal snarling in "A Romance With The Grave" or the malicious doom swamp of "Mother Nothingness", which is going to secure The Vision Bleak a tenacious and gloomy memorial in the morass of the underworld. Kutulu Doom!
Set sails, cast a final glance ashore: whosoever hires on the deathship shall never return again.

"Into the Maelstrom I descend..."
The 4 track EP "The Kindred Of The Sunset" serves as harbinger of The Vision Bleak's forthcoming album "The Unknown", to be released on June 3rd 2016.
But the diverse and high-quality EP is more than just a simple appetizer for the album. The hymn-like title track and the nightmarish "The Whine Of The Cemetery Hound", both taken from "The Unknown", are accompanied by two exclusive tracks: a cover version of the Tiamat classic "The Sleeping Beauty" and the atmospheric instrumental piece "Purification Afterglow".
"The Kindred Of The Sunset" is available as Digisleeve CD, limited to 1.000 copies, and LP, limited to 500 copies.
Two years after the mighty concept album "Carpathia - A Dramatic Poem", The Vision Bleak are back with "The Wolves Go Hunt Their Prey" - stronger and more diverse than ever before. On their third album, you will find songs that definitely rank among the heaviest The Vision Bleak have ever written; yet at the same time you'll also find some of their most atmospheric and most stringent tracks. 'The Demon Of The Mire', for example, exposes the Death Metal roots of the Franconian duo as plainly as never before; 'The Black Pharaoh Trilogy' reminds us of the epic dimensions of their previous album; and, by virtue of its sweeping character, 'By Our Brotherhood With Seth' has become The Vision Bleak's band anthem and the high point of every concert.
With "Witching Hour" (2013), The Vision Bleak returned to their musical and conceptual roots. They had come full circle - Schwadorf and Konstanz arrived at the end of a journey spanning five albums. They knew exactly that the band's next step had to mark a new beginning, an advance into … the unknown.

The title "The Unknown" says it all. For their sixth album, The Vision Bleak broke free from the songwriting patterns of the past and dared to compose without any bias or restriction. The result: "The Unknown" is as diverse and boisterously creative as it can get. An almost palpable intensity, "emotions that are metaphysically present", to quote Schwadorf, permeate the songs and make them sound fresher than many would have expected.

Lyrically, The Vision Bleak break new ground as well. Gone are the tried-and-trusted nods to horror classics and fictional terror, to legend and lore. What has remained similar is the vividly poetic, at times archaic language, yet the lyrics of "The Unknown" are more metaphoric, closer to the musicians' lives. Gone, therefore, are the times of "creepy and haunting entertainment" - in 2016, The Vision Bleak are facing their personal demons and the horror that lives within themselves.
Eventually, this reinvention is also reflected in the graphic design of the album. The spectacular front cover was created by no other than legendary artist Dan Seagrave (Entombed, Dismember, Morbid Angel …), who manages to give life to the world of "The Unknown" in a richly detailed painting.

So have the two masterminds really shed their identity? Not at all. Initiates will find plenty of familiar elements on "The Unknown": Schwadorf's unique guitar melodies, Konstanz' characteristic singing, the constantly gripping atmosphere, the interplay between fury and elegance … All of this also elevates the deathship captains' latest work beyond comparison - it is just a breath of fresh air that gives the music a novel shine. "The Unknown" is The Vision Bleak's second birth.
